Vuqar Alakbarov, son of former Labor and Social Protection Minister Fuzuli Alakbarov, gave testimony at the trial of those accused of involvement in last year’s riots in the town of Ismayilli.

A group of Ismayilli residents set fire to a hotel and luxury cars owned by the Alakbarovs during the riots.

Vuqar Alakbarov said he was not in Ismayilli at the time and heard of the incident on TV.

Ismayilli residents claimed it was the ex-minister’s son who provoked the riots by beating a taxi driver and shouting insults at local residents.

Dozens of people, including Ilqar Mammadov, leader of the opposition group Real, and Toviq Yaqublu, deputy head of the opposition Musavat party, were arrested following the riots.

Fuzulu Alakbarov was replaced by President Ilham Aliyev in October.
