Two more Azerbaijani nationals fighting against forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad have been killed in Syria, APA news service said, citing jihadist sources.

The men were identified as Seyfullah Lazgi, from Azerbaijan’s Qusar District, and Nicat, 18. Both were members of the Al-Nusra Front, linked to the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

Nicat was a first-year university student. Rebel websites published his pictures.

At least 11 Azerbaijani nationals have been killed in Syria in January alone, according to local media reports. One of them was a 14-year-old child.

Most of Azerbaijanis fighting in Syria are members of the Salafi sect.

Qamat Suleymanov and Alixan Musayev, two prominent leaders of Azerbaijan’s Salafi community, issued statements last week, urging followers not to join the Syrian war. They said the war in Syria cannot be classified as a jihad, or holy war.
