Police warn against unsanctioned demo in Azeri capital

Police will thwartany attempt to stage unsanctioned demonstrations in the Azeri capital, said Maj-GenSahlab Bagirov, deputy chief of Baku police.

“If anyoneattempts to disrupt public order by organizing an unauthorized demonstration,police will prevent it,” Bagirov told APA news agency.

A campaign was launchedon Facebook to rally support for a rally at Baku’s main Azadliq square inprotest against the latest hike in gasoline prices.

Azerbaijan’sTariff Council decided on December 2 to increase the prices by about 30percent.

A liter ofgasoline AI-95 sold for 0.60 AZN now costs 0.80 AZN, and the AI-92 and AI-80gasoline sold for 0.55 AZN now costs 0.70 AZN per liter.

One US dollar isequal to 0.7844 AZN according to Dec. 3 official exchange rate.

The tariff fornatural gas sales to companies rose to 80 AZN per 1,000 cubic meters.
