Trump, Xi begin talks in Beijing amid trade, Iran tensions
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping began talks in Beijing on Thursday, with trade, technology, Taiwan and the Iran conflict expected to dominate the agenda.
The meeting at the Great Hall of the People comes during Trump’s two-day visit to China and is being closely watched by global markets and governments.
Xi said stable relations between China and the United States were important for global stability, while Trump said ties between the two countries could become “better than ever.”
The talks come amid continuing disputes over tariffs, semiconductor restrictions, Taiwan and Beijing’s possible role in efforts to ease tensions around Iran.
International media reported that Washington is seeking progress on trade and market access, while Beijing is expected to press for limits on U.S. support for Taiwan.
