Benfica’s efforts are applauded by the home fans and rightly so. But Bayern are the team heading to the semi-final, and that is also right, although Martinez should have been sent off. The Germans are a formidable side because they keep and move the ball so well but they are a little flakey defensively. Ergo they are beatable. It would be interesting to see them against Atletico Madrid in the semi-final. That would leave Manchester City to face Real Madrid, the only remaining team that Manuel Pellegrini’s side look capable of bettering over two legs.
