Armenia must respect Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity

The territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries must be respected upon the international standards, Vahe Avetyan, Armenian human rights activist, said in Baku Nov. 9.

"Armenia can not always ignore international law,” he said. "It must respect the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.”

"As public organizations, we have repeatedly said that we respect the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and our visit to Baku testifies to the fact that we stand for people's diplomacy," Avetyan said.

He added that the fundamental basis was created for the work on all points: policy, peacekeeping activity and others as part of the conference "Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: main obstacles and prospects for conflict settlement. The look from Armenia and Azerbaijan", recently held in Baku.

"The entire situation with the so-called public movement in Armenia, voicing the position of the country’s authorities, is aimed at disrupting the process that we are carrying out with our Azerbaijani colleagues," he said.

Avetyan added that he has written a book on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Avetyan wants to publish the book in Baku and give the sales proceeds to Azerbaijanis and Armenians, who suffered as a result of the war, and refugees.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
