Azerbaijan ranks ninth in the Global Militarization Index 2016.

According to News.Az, it was stated in a recent study of the Global Militarization Index 2016, conducted by the Bonn International Center for Conversion.

The research has been conducted annually since 1990. The authors estimate one hundred and fifty countries around the world on a number of parameters: the cost of the military sphere as a percentage of GDP, the number of people employed in this sector of the population, and the number of heavy weapons in the country in proportion to population.

The report is compiled on the basis of data of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the BICC.

Israel, Singapore and Armenia occupy the top three of the Global Militarization Index 2016 rankings. Jordan is located on the 4th place.

The study's authors link such a rapid military build-up in the Caucasus with the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The top ten is as follows:

1. Israel
2. Singapore
3. Armenia
4. Jordan
5. Russia
6. South Korea
7. Cyprus
8. Greece
9. Azerbaijan
10. Brunei
