Minister: Football in Azerbaijan needs deep reforms

Football in Azerbaijan needs deep reforms, Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibovsaid in an interview, speaking about the development of football in the country.

In his opinion, the main problem is the small number of clubs in the championship of Azerbaijan: "Personally, I think that there should be many clubs in the national championship. In any sport, not only in football, but also in volleyball, handball and other team sports, the national team cannot be staffed with players if the clubs are not numerous and developed. The small number of clubs today is one of the reasons that is main obstacle for us in this process. True, the Football Federation has increased the number of participants in the championship by two clubs, there have been certain changes in the first division. Again, fundamental changes are needed in this area.”

Farid Gayibov stressed that this year the national team performed well in its last games: "But the fact is that until now we have never played at the main stage of the European and World Championships. We didn’t show good results. To do this, it is necessary to attract both businessmen and companies to this area. We must ensure their participation in the management of the clubs. The number of clubs must be increased.”
