Astrophysicist warns of mass Starlink satellite re-entries

Astrophysicist warns of mass Starlink satellite re-entries

Up to five Starlink satellites could soon be falling back to Earth each day, according to EarthSky.

Former Harvard astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell said that one to two Starlink satellites currently re-enter daily, but that figure could soon rise to five, which he described as inevitable.

He explained that the growing number of satellites in low-Earth orbit is not limited to SpaceX. Most satellites have a lifespan of five to seven years. There are now around 8,000 Starlink satellites in orbit, and with the addition of Amazon Kuiper and Chinese networks, the total number of low-orbit satellites is expected to exceed 30,000 in the near future.
